How Basque am I? Early L2 speakers as border entities

Some months ago, the dynamic Euskozenoa ('the era of Basque') gathered some Basque speakers from the diaspora and challenged us to talk about how the new Basqueness is being shaped in a constantly changing world. For me, as someone who did not acquire Basque at home (even though it had some presence, since our lineage is Basque), the toughest one was to rate myself in terms of Basqueness. In the video, I explain why.

For us, those who come from mostly Spanish/French-speaking households, we are often seen as non authentic Basques in the community. We often have an accent, our grammar might not be perfect, and sometimes, it is just language ideology. Moreover, we tend to feel pretty alone in our town, too, since it is hard for us to find a local community that shares the same linguistic and cultural objectives as yourself. It is not understood why we would remotely want to speak Basque if Spanish/French is so universal and so easy and cool.

In this video, I explain briefly the feeling of early L2 Basque speakers as "border entities" (Anzaldua, 2015) between our origin and our desire.

⁉️ Do you ever feel a misfit in your community?
⁉️ Is this feeling only reserved to early bilinguals, or do natives also feel segregated in a way?
⁉️ Why do we find these tendencies in minorized contexts?
