What was the first Basque book ever published?
Linguae Vasconum Primitiae: a cultural revolution.
📖 The first Basque book ever published: Linguae Vasconum Primitiae (Etxepare, 1545) 📖
🗣Did you know Etxepare's work?
The book
- Title: Linguae Vasconum Primitiae (The First Fruits of the Basque Language)
- Publication: 1545, Bordeaux
- Author: Bernart Etxepare
- Content: 15 poems (religion, love, and linguistic pride)
- Objective: to provide Basques with some written material to spend time.
Bernart Etxepare
- Born between 1470 and 1480, possibly in Sarasketa, in the current Northern Basque Country (Low Navarre).
- A border being, navigating the cultural and linguistic dichotomies of Basque/French and Catholic/Protestant.
- Advocated for the normalization of Basque, both as a spoken and written language.
Historical context
The 16th century was a time of profound change:
- The Kingdom of Navarre, once unifying many Basque-speaking regions, lost its last territory in 1512.
- Etxepare's hometown was caught in shifting borders between the Kingdom of Navarre, the Crown of Castille (Spain) and the Kingdom of France (1515–30).
- Castillian Spanish and Parisian French are settled as the new administrative languages.
Map: the Kingdom of Navarre (1512) between the Crown of Castile, the Crown of Aragon and the Kingdom of France, with the successive conquests by Castile (1200, 1463) and the incorporation into France.
Inside the book
- Cover
- Note: orthographic criteria (there wasn't a unified one)
- Dedication: to Bernard Lehete, the King's counsel, who "sponsored" this publication, highlighting the importance of printing in Basque.
- Content: 2 religious poems, 10 romantic poems, 1 autobiographical poem, 2 language defense poems.
Berce gendec uste çuten / Ecin scriba çayteyen / Oray dute phorogatu / Enganatu cirela.
"The others thought that it could not be written. Now they will realize how deceived they were."
Two poems in defense of the Basque language
- Kontrapas: a chant urging Basque to "go forth" into the world.
Heuskara, jalgi hadi kanpora (Basque, go forth outside),
Heuskara, jalgi hadi plazara (Basque, go forth into the street),
Heuskara, jalgi hadi mundura (Basque, go forth into the world). - Sautrela: celebrates Basque's newfound presence and triumph. Basque is already "out":
Heuskara da kanpora eta goazen oro dantzara (Basque has come forth, and let us all go and dance).
Why was it revolutionary?
- Challenging Western hegemony: by proving Basque could be written, Etxepare normalized a minority language and resisted linguistic dominance.
- Groundbreaking literacy project: without (known) published predecessors, he selected orthographic and dialectal variants, pioneering the first steps toward a Basque literary tradition.
- A performative call to action: his work was metaperformative, empowering Basque speakers to celebrate and socialize in their own language.
- Resilience: his poems, often sung or interpreted, created new social spaces for Basque.
- Memory: in Diana Taylor's words, performances reenact history, making Etxepare's work a living testament to Basque culture.
- Foundation for Standard Basque: his literacy project paved the way for today's unified Basque used in education, media, and literature. However, 500 years later, Basque still remains unofficial in his territory.
Map of Basque officiality today: Basque and Spanish both official; only Spanish official; only French official.
